A collection of honest thoughts in handmade books, 2016-2018
This collection of five handmade books, reminiscent of personal journals, feature simple poetry in the form of vulnerable thoughts and self-reflexive quips. Created using hand stitching and the outmoded technology of Letraset, these poetic and raw “books” present the journal as an aesthetic object. The work is an exploration of honest thought and the growing discrepancies between the public and private self. As private lives continue to be made increasingly public via methods like social media and technology, this written work examines inner dialog at a various stages of girlhood and exposes the anxious thoughts that define puberty and womanhood. Exploring topics that we are told should be kept quiet; insecurities, alienation, intimacy, the work is an invitation to vulnerability and closeness, even to an uncomfortable point.
